Free Valentines heart patterns inspired by Game of Thrones

NEW! I created a special edition print-at-home Greyjoy pattern card. See it here.

Winter crafting wouldn’t be complete without some artistic activities for Valentine’s Day. Following in the theme from the Game of Thrones-inspired snowflake patterns, I’ve created heart-shaped paper cutouts using interpretations of the Lannister lion, Baratheon stag, Targaryen dragon, and Stark direwolf sigils. And, like the snowflakes, I’m sharing these patterns for free! Read on for instructions and downloadable patterns.

Fair warning: this set is a bit more challenging than the snowflakes because there are a number of inside cuts that need to be made. Unless you’re clever with scissors, or are OK with cutting across the fold lines and reassembling later, I recommend a scrapbooking or X-Acto knife for the detail work.

Recommended supplies:

  • Scrapbooking or X-Acto knife.
  • Printed pattern(s), one per sheet.
  • Scotch tape
  • Scissors

Now on to the cutting. Illustrated instructions also follow.

  • Print one pattern on a sheet of paper.
  • Cut out the bounding square.
  • Using the vertical dashed line as a guide, fold the square in half so the design is facing you. This is the only fold you need to make.
  • I recommend taping together the 2 sides of the paper so it doesn’t move while cutting. Fold tape over the bottom and top sides, making sure the tape is only sticking to the empty gray areas.
  • Using a scrapbooking or Xacto knife (or, if you’re clever, scissors) cut out the inner gray areas of the design. White areas remain uncut. I prefer to start with the smaller details first and cut out the larger chunks later.
  • After you’ve cut the inner areas, you can use scissors to cut the outer shape of the heart.
  • Unfold your valentine heart and enjoy! You can glue it to red paper, your windows, and anything else you can think of.

They’ll look something like this when finished.

Feel free to use these for your personal use. However, please do not use for commercial uses or claim you are the designer, as these were designed by hand. As always, Game of Thrones is copyright George R.R. Martin / HBO; I’m spreading the cheer for fun 🙂
